Hollow plastic extrusions often require more tooling and cooling from an experienced extrusion manufacturer. Barbour has been in the game for the past 40 years extruding hollow profiles for a variety of industries. See some of our past projects here.
Barbour’s original history of complex hollow extrusion tool design comes from its dominance in the trophy column industry for 30+ years. A common phrase you will hear in extrusion is plastic wanting to take the path of least resistance. Creating a hollow extrusion is no exception, which is why sometimes more complex mandules and spider dies are created to hold the particular shape. The efficiency of the designs made in hollow tooled extrusions will dictate the performance of being able to hold the original shape desired. Years of trial and error has given Barbour Plastics Inc catalog of knowledge for hollow tool design.
Rigid hollow profiles can often serve as a more functional part by having many internal legs or odd geometry on the inside of the profile.
This is often attractive for engineers trying to consolidate a few streamlined manufactured parts into one. Complex rigid PVC hollow profiles are often seen in the refrigeration and window industry and usually justify a higher tooling cost with the amount of volume that comes with the project.
Barbours tooling department has allowed for complex tooling development at a very attractive cost comparison to the rest of the industry and many times have supported other companies in onshoring plastic extrusions to be made in the USA.
